Renewing Your TIE

Everything you Need to Know

TIE cards must be renewed 2 months before or up to 90 days after expiration. Renewal processes are completed online, and it’s essential to ensure that your residence status is still valid.

What is it?

Renewing Your TIE Card

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is your physical identity card as a foreign resident in Spain. Unlike your NIE, which never changes, your TIE must be renewed before it expires. This ensures your residency status remains valid and your records are up to date.

Application Process

How to Renew Your TIE Card

Renewals are submitted online via the Mercurio system:

  1. Ensure you have a digital certificate or electronic ID.
  2. Upload the required documents and sign them online.
  3. Pay the renewal fee through the Tax Agency’s payment gateway or your bank.

For a smoother process, consider using an agency to help with your application and avoid potential issues or denials.

Replacing Your TIE Card

If your TIE card is lost or stolen, you will need to replace it. While your NIE remains unchanged, you must reapply for a TIE card through the appropriate channels. The process is similar to renewal, requiring proof of identity and payment of applicable fees.
