Service for: Non-EU Citizens

Requesting an Invitation Letter

Everything you Need to Know

A Carta de Invitación is required for non-EU citizens visiting Spain on a short stay. The host must request it from the police, and it’s needed for the visa application process.

What is it?

Understanding the Invitation Letter

An invitation letter (Carta de Invitación) is a formal document required for non-EU citizens applying for a short-stay Schengen visa to visit Spain. It is issued by the host in Spain, who must be a legal resident or Spanish citizen. The letter serves as proof that the host will provide accommodation and take responsibility for the guest during their visit, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Requirements

How to Request an Invitation Letter

The host must apply for the invitation letter in person at the National Police Station or Foreigners’ Office in their area of residence. The following documents are required:

  • Identification: DNI/NIE (ID or residency card).
  • Proof of Residence: Empadronamiento and volante de convivencia, plus a utility bill, rental contract, or property deed.
  • Application Form: Including the administrative fee, which varies depending on the number of guests (approximately €70–80).

Processing times typically range from 10 to 20 working days, but this can vary by location. Once approved, the host receives the signed letter, which must be sent to the guest abroad for their visa application.

Important Considerations

Key Information About the Invitation Letter

  • Purpose: The letter supports the visa application but does not guarantee approval.
  • Validity: Only valid for short stays (up to 90 days).
  • Responsibility: The host takes responsibility for the guest during their visit.
  • Timelines: It’s essential to start the process early due to variable processing times.

The guest must include the original invitation letter in their visa application, which is assessed by the Spanish consulate along with other required documents.
